PR Corner – Column #1

Note: “PR Corner” is a new feature to the QCS Website, written by me, Dan DeWitt, new Public Relations Manager for the Queen City Striders. The “PR” in the title stands for “Public Relations” but it can also stand for “Personal Record” or “Proper Running” or anything else you can imagine. The goal of this column is to stir up some interest in the local running scene. I welcome your comments, criticisms, suggestions for future topics, or whatever else you’d like to share. Please e-mail all comments to me at qcstriders@gmail.com and I will respond to them as soon as possible.

Treadmills and Running: a Love/Hate Relationship

It’s a simple concept, really. The treadmill is no more than a strip of material moving round and around a platform. The impetus for the motion usually ends up being one half of a high-priced pair of running shoes. Set whatever pace you’d like, and run as far or as long as you wish. So what issue do I have with the treadmill?
Within this piece, I am going to examine some of the positive and negative feelings I have about treadmill running. At the end, I will invite you, the reader, to submit your comments about your love/hate for the treadmill.

Let’s begin with the negatives as there are quite a few. The first one I have is the annoying tendency for treadmills to be incorrectly calibrated. In January 2010, I would guess I logged nearly 150 miles on my treadmill. I usually run in the mornings and set the treadmill at 7mph. However, 7mph on my treadmill feels (to me, at least) like 7:00/mile pace does on a regular run outdoors. So where does the discrepancy lie between the reported ~8:30/mile on the treadmill display and the 7:00/mile in my brain? I have no idea. All I know is that every treadmill I’ve ever run on has made me feel incredibly slow and useless. If I think I’m in good shape, all I have to do is set the treadmill to a speed I can usually run outside with no problems, and then I find out quite rudely that, at least according to the treadmill, I am not fit to call myself a runner. Call for "Snow Stories"

BLIZZARD CENTRAL, USA - The Queen City Striders are asking YOU, local readers and runners, to submit your "snow stories" to the website. As you may have noticed, our region got smacked by a gigantic, two-round winter storm over the past week. We want to know the following:
How did it affect your life?
Were you able to make it out for work?
Was running even a possibility, or were you stuck inside?
Are your arms now the size of watermelons from all the shoveling?
Did you have access to a treadmill, and if you did, did you use it?
What has the storm done to your spring racing plans?
For each submission, we are hoping to post something similar to the following (using myself as an example):

My Story - Dan DeWitt:

In my case, the storm made it very difficult to run outside. Before this past week, I had just completed three weeks of high mileage, so I took a big step back this week. I plan to do the same over the next week and then get back into things towards the end of the month. I love to run in the snow, but when it becomes a never-ending game of car-dodging, I just get tired of it. Plus, it kills my lower legs! I am hoping some sunshine will melt a lot of the snow this week and start to make the streets a little more welcoming in the near future. My goals for the spring include the Tim Kennard 10-Miler and VA Beach 8k in March and the Mountain MD Marathon in April. This storm has hopefully made me think a little more wisely about my training heading into these events. So long as any more major storms stay away, I am hoping my remaining weeks of training will keep me in shape for these events.

Please e-mail your submissions to me at qcstriders@gmail.com. Also, please feel free to submit photos of you and your family out in the snow. Our goal is to be able to come together as a community of runners, even if the snow has kept us from being able to physically meet to run together very much over the last week or two.Read More

Stay safe out there and happy running!

                                                        2010 Marine Corps Marathon

The Queen City Striders are looking for a few good men and women to compete in the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 31st. The Marine Corps Marathon is traditionally the 7th largest marathon in the world and the 5th largest in the United States.

The Striders have been trying to build a team atmosphere among club members. The MCM presents a unique opportunity for club members to train together towards a goal and to hopefully exceed those goals together on race day. To pursue completion of the MCM as a fall goal, the Striders will be promoting group training runs for those members who will commit to representing QCS on October 31st.
The Marine Corps Marathon has seen its fair share of success by the Queen City Striders. In 1981, Dave Rhinehart placed 4th overall. Former QCS Racing Circuit winner Jeff Smith won the whole thing in a time of 2:2129. More recently, Jaron Hawkins finished 3rd and 4th in 2007 and 2008. Those same years, a team representing the Striders made up of Hawkins, Jeremy Rice, and David Mertz won the team division.
However, the MCM has never seen a giant contingent of runners from QCS. This year, let’s take down a whole bunch of people and show the running community what it truly means to be a member of a running club. It is about camaraderie and pushing each other towards higher heights and tougher goals.

Registration for MCM will start on April 7th. But this race fills up very fast. The Striders would like to know if you are interested. Plans need to be made to lock in hotel rooms at the group rate. This year, the Striders plan on staying at the Virginian Suites adjacent to the finish line.

If you are interested in competing with other QCS athletes at the Marine Corps Marathon, please contact the Striders at qcstriders@gmail.com or Jaron Hawkins at frojoe23@hotmail.com. For additional details or any questions, address them to either
e-mail address above.

Our hope is to field a male and female team as well as Masters teams for each sex. We’d also like to see some members back up on the podium this year!
Race Directors Meeting

The Queen City Striders will be hosting an informative session for all race directors that plan on utilizing QCS race management services. The session will be held on Thursday March 11th from 6-8pm at the Frostburg City Library meeting room.

The session will focus on how to properly manage a road race. Topics discussed will include: insurance, setting up a course, responsibilities of race directors and responsibilities of QCS. Race directors are encouraged to bring any questions they might have for a question-and-answer session following the instructional portion of the class.

QCS will look at managing a race from three different perspectives: the race director, the timer, and the volunteers. Any other interested QCS members are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact qcstriders@gmail.com.
"A Simpler Time"
Guest Columnist: Colby Smith

Allow me, if only for the next few minutes, to take you back to a simpler time. A time before games killed Facebook and Billy Mays still graced those Mighty Putty commercials with his presence – the distant past of November 2008.

It was during these ancient times that yours truly was concluding his high school cross-country career. Once every season for four years I hauled myself up The Dip at Hereford High School’s celebrated cross course. But never had I performed such exertion at the State Finals. Never, that is, until November 2008. After a glorious team performance at the regional meet, I was elated to even be competing in the state meet for the first time. Adding to the joy, I finished my final race as a high school cross-country runner with a PR on the Bull Run course. I could not have asked for a better way to go out.

The 2008 State Meet was indeed bittersweet for me. On one hand, I could smile at the fact that I had just concluded a truly fantastic career on a wonderfully high note. Now, when I describe my career as “fantastic,” I in no way assert my own superiority as a runner. Look up my times. You won’t be too impressed. Nevertheless, I loved every minute I spent with my team and my coaches. That hideous beast of a hill at Hereford meant something. We did not simply survive the torture; we survived together. None but your fellow runners could understand the bond, making all that more special.

Striders take 1-2-3 at Kennard 10-miler
Results
SALISBURY, MD - Three local runners traveled to Salisbury on Sunday for the 7th Annual Tim Kennard 10 Mile River Run and 5k Run/Walk. The race, held in honor of Tim Kennard, who died of renal cancer in 2004, sends proceeds to children and animals as Tim requested. Dan DeWitt and Jeremy Rice, both of Frostburg, and Woody Snoberger of Carpendale, WV, led the pack of runners to the finish, taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. The runners, who are members of local non-profit running club Queen City Striders and compete for the Hagerstown-based Cumberland Valley Athletic Club, enjoyed beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s and a welcome lack of snow.
DeWitt broke the tape in 53:56, a pace of just under 5:25 per mile. DeWitt's time was well off the mark from the course record of 52:16, held by Frostburg's own Jaron Hawkins. Hawkins won the race in 2008 and 2009 with times of 52:16 and 52:56, respectively. He was unable to attend this year due to a scheduling conflict. Rice maintained a constant pace after mile one, and finished in 59:08. Snoberger ran well early and held on to finish third in 1:01:12. All three runners are training for various spring races and will converge together again to race the Marine Corps Marathon (along with Hawkins and a large contingent of several other Queen City Striders) in October 2010. The Tim Kennard race served as a welcome break from the tough winter weather for these runners.
