DEEP CREEK LAKE, Md., Jan. 16 -- Frostburg resident Dan DeWitt came out of winter hibernation long enough to secure a victory in the annual Uno's Snowflake Chase 5-miler at Deep Creek Lake.

DeWitt, 22, bested 90 other runners to the finish line with a time of 27 minutes and 7 seconds - good for a pace of 5:26 per mile. Fellow Mountain City resident Jeremy Rice, 27, was second in 29:58 and Ridgeley, W.Va., resident Dennis Mickey took third overall in 30:05.

"I had a good day," DeWitt said. "I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was good to get out after being cooped up for a couple weeks."

Queen City Striders hold Annual Awards Banquet
By Dan Dewitt

FROSTBURG, MD - St. Paul's Lutheran Church, located on the corner of Main & Water Streets in Frostburg, MD, opened its doors on Sunday, January 31, 2010 to the Queen City Striders Sunday for the 2010 Queen City Striders (QCS) Annual Awards Banquet. Held annually to recognize and award area runners who compete at local running events, the Banquet consists of a dinner and program run by Striders' members. QCS Vice President Jaron Hawkins called the banquet to order with some opening remarks and Dan DeWitt gave the invocation. This year the Striders enjoyed a delicious dinner of stuffed shells, green beans, and vegetables prepared by Strider member Jane Rossi.

After dinner, Jaron Hawkins made his comments about QCS Running during the 2009 year. He looked forward to the 2010 running calendar, referring to the upcoming year as "the year of the comeback." Hawkins noted the end of a remarkable streak in area running. From 1993-2008, there has been either a high school cross-country state championship team or individual in West Virginia or Maryland. Over that time span, there have been 15 state championship teams and 22 individual state champions from our area. With that streak coming to an end in 2009, Hawkins urged Striders members and the high-schoolers present to "get after it in 2010. It's time to consider 2009 dead and buried and start a new streak in 2010."

Outgoing Club President George Nolan announced and conducted a vote on the incoming slate of club officers: Rob Smith as President, Jaron Hawkins as Vice President, Della Cook as Secretary, and Tommy Chandler as Treasurer.

Hawkins began the Awards portion of the banquet by awarding Achievement awards to Frostburg State University Runners Gwen Massey and Anne Patron, who both finished with the coveted All-Region distinction during the 2009 Cross-Country season. Such an accomplishment is rare, and these two runners worked together and pushed each other as teammates and as friends to realize their full potential. Massey graduates this year while Patron still has two seasons left to compete for the Bobcats. Congratulations to both runners! Read More

PR Corner – Column #1

Note: “PR Corner” is a new feature to the QCS Website, written by me, Dan DeWitt, new Public Relations Manager for the Queen City Striders. The “PR” in the title stands for “Public Relations” but it can also stand for “Personal Record” or “Proper Running” or anything else you can imagine. The goal of this column is to stir up some interest in the local running scene. I welcome your comments, criticisms, suggestions for future topics, or whatever else you’d like to share. Please e-mail all comments to me at qcstriders@gmail.com and I will respond to them as soon as possible.

Treadmills and Running: a Love/Hate Relationship

It’s a simple concept, really. The treadmill is no more than a strip of material moving round and around a platform. The impetus for the motion usually ends up being one half of a high-priced pair of running shoes. Set whatever pace you’d like, and run as far or as long as you wish. So what issue do I have with the treadmill?
Within this piece, I am going to examine some of the positive and negative feelings I have about treadmill running. At the end, I will invite you, the reader, to submit your comments about your love/hate for the treadmill.

Let’s begin with the negatives as there are quite a few. The first one I have is the annoying tendency for treadmills to be incorrectly calibrated. In January 2010, I would guess I logged nearly 150 miles on my treadmill. I usually run in the mornings and set the treadmill at 7mph. However, 7mph on my treadmill feels (to me, at least) like 7:00/mile pace does on a regular run outdoors. So where does the discrepancy lie between the reported ~8:30/mile on the treadmill display and the 7:00/mile in my brain? I have no idea. All I know is that every treadmill I’ve ever run on has made me feel incredibly slow and useless. If I think I’m in good shape, all I have to do is set the treadmill to a speed I can usually run outside with no problems, and then I find out quite rudely that, at least according to the treadmill, I am not fit to call myself a runner.
