GRANTSVILLE, Md. - Katie’s 5K race director Norm DeRosa paraphrased running legend Bill Rodgers before the start of Saturday’s jaunt through New Germany State Park when he said running a race was a celebration.
“It is for me,” agreed fellow runner Tony Yurko.
It likely was for many others, too. But for Mike Wagus, Saturday’s run meant a lot more. The 41-year-old Cumberland resident recently lost more than 80 pounds and started walking, then jogging. Katie’s 5K was his first time at the starting line of an organized event. It was a reward, a goal - and maybe a sign of things to come.
Wagus had not only the courage to start, but the determination to finish. Read More

Reeds fare well in running to finish line

FROSTBURG — Young Madison Reed might have felt the need to make up for lost miles after suffering from a stomach ache two weeks ago during the start of the Queen City Junior Striders summer running series.
Of course, there might also have been a hint of sibling rivalry as Madison, 10, of Ellerslie, competed with her younger brother Mason, 5, and more than 130 others on Tuesday in both the 1-mile and 2-mile runs at Parris N. Glendening Park in Frostburg.
The Reeds took turns leading each other to the finish line. Madison edged Mason in the shorter distance and finished in 9 minutes, 42 seconds — about 3 seconds in front of Mason. Madison placed 22nd out of 56 runners ages 12 and under. Mason finished 23rd.
Kristian Robinette, 10, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., won the overall title in 6:36 and Marie Lewis was the top female finisher in 7:24.
In the 13-and-older division, Derek Fuller, 14, won in 6:19 and Madison Offstein was the first young lady to cross the finish line. Offstein, 13, finished ninth overall in 7:18.
In the 2-mile cross country run, Mason Reed finished in front of his older sister in 39th place in 22:47. Madison Reed was 40th in 24:06. Jaron Hawkins, 26, of Frostburg, was first overall in 12:09. Marie Lewis, 10, was the top female in 18:36.
Complete results and more than 750 race-day photos can be viewed online at www.TriStateRunnur.com.
The third of the six-race series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Frankfort High School in Short Gap, W.Va. The cost is $1 per runner. Call Dennis Mickey at (304) 738-0511 for more information.
DeWitt does it before saying ‘I do”
Beall High, Lehigh grad wins 5K less than 6 hours before wedding

LONACONING – Dan DeWitt had a better reason than anyone to cross the finish line on Saturday during the 21st annual Iron Furnace 5K run in southwestern Allegany County.
Maybe that’s why he finished first.

DeWitt, 21, of Frostburg, had a 2 p.m. wedding to attend – his own – and covered the 3.1-mile road course in 15 minutes and 35 seconds to easily place first among more than 250 registered runners and walkers. He averaged 5:01 per mile.
The time was 33 seconds faster than his fourth-place effort in 2008. DeWitt said the primary focus was on winning the $200 cash prize – mission accomplished – as he and new bride Theresa Anne DeWitt (nee Murray) were headed to Jamaica for their honeymoon.
Following age-old custom, DeWitt said he wasn’t able to see his bride-to-be before the ceremony at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Mount Savage later in the day, so he might as well run and try to earn a little spending money. Read More
Reed, Lewis top field in 1-mile XC run
SHORT GAP, W.Va. – Joel Reed is not yet 13. And that makes a big difference.
Area runners Randy Lowe, Luke Smith, Rob Smith and Tom Ruckert jog to what will serve as the starting line for the first Salem Challenge 5K (3.1-mile) cross country race scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 25 at Maryland Salem Children's Trust.
Proceeds from the 5K run and 1-mile run/walk will benefit the school and shelter, which provide a home, family, counseling and education to children ages 6 to 18 who have been abused, neglected and abandoned. The facility is located on a 380-acre farm in eastern Garrett County.
The 5K course features a difficult climb over challenging terrain. The 1-mile run/walk is more friendly to beginners. Call Ruckert at (301) 689-6625 ext. 213 Entry form
Salem Challenge 5K (3.1-mile) cross country race
An error in preliminary results showed Reed, 12, finishing in fourth place in the 13-and-older division of the Queen City Junior Striders 1-mile cross country run Tuesday at Frankfort High School.
In his proper 12-and-under age group, Reed was first among 57 others to get to the finish line with a time of 6 minutes, 42 seconds on the out-and-back course with challenging, uneven terrain. Canyon Lohnas, 12, of Frostburg, was second with a time of 7:16 and Brooks Mickey, 12, was third in 7:24.
Brayden Pennington, 12, placed fourth in 7:47 while Dakota Bierman, 11, rounded out the top five with a time of 7:48.
Marie Lewis, 10, was sixth overall and the first female to cross the finish line in the 12-and-under division. Elizabeth Lowe, 11, was two places and six seconds back in 7:55. Megan Lewis, 9, was third. Read More
