Area elites Hawkins and Davis use Hampshire Wellness 5k to begin comebacks

ROMNEY, WV – On a sunny and humid Saturday morning, Jaron Hawkins and Jennifer Davis led 45 other competitors to the finish line at the Hampshire Wellness and Fitness Relay for Life 5k Race, 5k Walk, and 2-Mile Fun Walk. Held at Romney’s Hampshire Wellness and Fitness, which proved to be a perfect venue for hosting a race such as this with its ample parking, facilities, and staff, a total of 47 finishers in the three races moved through a two-loop course featuring a trip in the Harvest Hills Subdivision.

First runner to break the tape (and first male finisher) was Frostburg’s Jaron Hawkins, 27, in 17:55. Hawkins, the area’s top marathoner, is returning to form after spending several months with Achilles and heel spur problems. He is traveling to Washington this October with several other members of the local running club, Queen City Striders, to compete in the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon. Having finished 3rd and 4th in that race in 2007 and 2008 with times of 2:25:34 and 2:25:17, respectively, Hawkins has hopes of getting “on the podium” and nabbing another top-three finish while competing for the win this fall. Hawkins felt good on Saturday “through the first two miles” but has been battling an ongoing calf problem which flared up over the race’s late stages. Still, he hung tough and pulled in the win.

Giving Hawkins reason to be nervous over the last mile was local superstar Jennifer Davis, 27, of Romney. Davis finished in 18:02, taking second overall and finishing as the first female. Davis, who currently is an assistant coach for the women’s running programs at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, has had an enormously successful running career to date. After a dominant tenure at Hampshire High School in Romney, she went on to West Virginia University under Coach Sean Cleary. Competing at WVU from 2001 to 2005, Davis qualified for NCAA Division I National Championship competition five times in cross-country, the 5,000 meter run, and the distance medley relay. She holds the second-fastest time in school history in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:42.58) and won the 2005 ECAC 3,000 meter title in 9:33.61. On Saturday, Davis said she was just returning to competition after nearly two-and-a-half years of battling injuries. Davis felt “really good” about her effort and said she was happy to return to racing and get her first race “out of the way.” When asked about her upcoming goals, Davis said she plans to get back onto the track in July and also compete on the roads, while trying to achieve her time goals. “My goal as my training is starting to pick up was the 5k, I wanted to break 16:00 on the track and 17:00 on the roads,” she said, both of which are strong likelihoods if she continues to enjoy an uninterrupted training cycle.

Completing the top three finishers on the male side were Matthew Barnes, 32, of Fairfax, VA, and Wayne Simon, 47, of Augusta, WV, who finished in 19:43 and 21:52, respectively. On the female side, 2nd place went to 11-year-old Kaylee Buckbee of Cumberland in 23:41, and third went to 35-year-old Mary Barnes of Fairfax, VA in 24:28. The Striders would like to wish congratulations and good luck to Matthew and Mary Barnes, who were married just two weeks ago. Best wishes!

In the 5k Walk, 62-year-old Cathy Pardee of Burlington, WV, finished first in a time of 50:17, while in the 2-mile Fun Walk, 10-year-old Madison Harvey took first in 28:51.

Race director Kristy Harvey, who works as a pool/exercise specialist at the Hampshire Wellness and Fitness Center, did a great job in organizing this race, which is sure to grow given its great atmosphere and enjoyable post race party, where food and drinks were available to athletes while results were tabulated and door prizes were given out.

For full results of any of the races, or for more information, please log onto the Queen City Striders website at http://www.qcstriders.org or e-mail Dan DeWitt, QCS Public Relations Manager, at qcstriders@gmail.com. The next race on the Striders calendar is June 26 for the popular Iron Furnace 5k in Lonaconing, MD.

LONACONING, MD - Jennifer Davis continued a very successful summer of training at the 2010 Iron Furnace 5k Run and 1.5 Mile Walk on Saturday in Lonaconing. The 27-year-old assistant track coach at West Virginia University in Morgantown took top honors in the female race with a time of 17:24, a pace of 5:37 per mile. The course, which begins at George's Creek Elementary School, runs down MD36, up towards Dan's Mountain and then right onto Watercliff Street before heading toward downtown Lonaconing, features a quick first two miles. The last mile is a grinding climb up Robbin Street and back past Egle Nursing Home, before returning back to the finish just adjacent to Iron Furnace Park. Davis had no trouble with the course and continues a string of summer races. She finished as first female at the Hampshire Wellness and Fitness Center Relay for Like 5k on June 12 and then took third overall female at the Greater Clarksburg 10k on June 19 with a time of 37:16.

Finishing second and third overall for the females was Amy Rowan, 30, of Cumberland in 20:43, and Christina Aumand, 21, of Chesapeake Beach, MD in 21:40.

DeWitt claimed first place in a race between former Lehigh University graduates. Second-place finisher Steve Rosinski, 25, of Rochester, NY, currently attends Optometry School at Ohio State University. He was on his way through Maryland going to Virginia Beach, VA, and competed in the Iron Furnace 5k as a way to stay in shape for upcoming triathlons. Rosinski, with a 25:20 8k personal best while at Lehigh, has been picked up by PowerBar as he competes at the national level in triathlons. DeWitt held off Rosinski just long enough, breaking the tape in 15:44 to Rosinski's 16:05. DeWitt is in training for the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon to be held in October in Washington, D.C.  Competing under the colors of the Hagerstown-based Cumberland Valley Athletic Club and also being an active member of the Queen City Striders, DeWitt will join many other Striders on Halloween day in our nation's capital, as the Cumberland-based club looks to extend its rich history at the race. This includes Cumberland resident Jeff Smith's 1982 victory and the 3rd and 4th place finishes in 2007 and 2008, respectively, of Frostburg resident Jaron Hawkins.

Coming across as third male overall was Frostburg resident Gavin Caupp, 20, in a time of 16:24. First place overall male in the 1.5 mile walk went to Logan Kiddy, 7, of Lonaconing, in 12:58, while first place female went to Sarah Dicken, 23, of Westernport, in 13:15.

The Queen City Striders would like to thank all the volunteers and race officials that helped this race go smoothly, especially race director Tom Dawson. The next event on the Club calendar is the third installment of the popular Junior Striders series, to be held on Tuesday, June 29, at Frankfort Middle School. Race director Dennis Mickey will begin the warmup activities for the events at 6:30PM.

Mickey Refused to be Denied on Home Course

Results

Using somewhat of a home course advantage, Brooks Mickey sprinted to a win in the 1-mile race of the third Junior Striders Series held at Frankfort High School in 6:43. Mickey took the lead from Ben Bensavage with a little less than 400 meters to go, using a steep downhill to set up a strong finish. His father, Dennis Mickey, served as a long time coach of cross-country and track at Frankfort High School and undoubtedly has had his son in tow on many trips around the course. Outstanding youth runner Kaylee Buckbee finished right with the boys for a sixth place overall finish and first amongst females with a time of 7:01. The mile event had 57 total finishers.
With the mile over, it was time for the big boys to come out and play in the 2-mile event. Doug Lewis, 44, jumped out to a commanding lead early, stringing out the pack coming in for the mile split before heading back out for another loop. Lewis had built up a lead of 30 seconds over Jaron Hawkins. In the second half of the race, Hawkins was able to catch Lewis and come even with 400 meters to go, but Lewis was too much and had too much gas for Hawkins. Lewis broke the tape in 13:07 with Hawkins one second behind.
The next Junior Striders event will be held at Keyser High School on Tuesday, July 8th. Warm-up and stretching will begin at 6:30 P.M.
Shreve, Sober finish free and clear of field at Independence 5k in Keyser

Overall | Awards

KEYSER - The 20th Independence 5k Run was held Saturday, July 3, 2010 in Keyser, West Virginia, to help benefit the Keyser Kiwanis Breakfast Club. This storied race, which is a big draw every summer for locals and out-of-towners alike, had 100 finishers this year. First to cross the line overall and on the male side was 19-year-old Ryan Shreve. Shreve, a resident of Keyser, broke the tape in a time of 17:27, good for 5:37 per mile over the 3.1 mile course. Shreve said he "would like to be very prepared going into my sophomore year of cross-country," referring to his role as a member of the West Liberty University men's cross-country team. Upcoming goals include running in the 16-minute range for his next 5k. Shreve said he enjoys the Independence 5k because it's "very good course and it has a very good turnout. It's also a very good course to try for a new PR."

Finishing second and third for the males were Taven Rohrbaugh, 17, from Burlington, WV in 17:53 and John Burgess, 34, in 18:53.

On the women's side, it was local elite Jennifer Sober, 37, of McHenry, who crossed the line first in a time of 18:57. The sub-19:00 clocking placed her ahead of 94 other competitors and behind only four men. Sober, who runs for Saucony, teaches a "Running 101" class at Garrett Community College and competes at a high level throughout the year. Recent successes include a sub-1:30:00 clocking at the June 5 Decker's Creek Trail Half-Marathon in Morgantown, WV.

Second and third for the women were Amy Rowan, 30, in 20:00, and Mary Jane Baniak, 37, in 21:54.

A non-competitive 1.5 mile walk was held in concurrence with the 5k run. The Independence 5k also featured a 1/4-mile Kids' Firecracker Run, which traversed one lap around the old asphalt track near the Keyser Community Swimming Pool and offered shirts, prize bags, and certificates to all participants.

This race was part of the 2010 Club Calendar for local running club Queen City Striders. Next on the club calendar is the July 10 Lisa Wade 5k in Westernport. For more information about the club, or for full results of the Independence 5k, please visit the Club Website at http://www.qcstriders.org or e-mail qcstriders@gmail.com. Thanks to all those who helped out and participated in this year's race, and we'll see you at the next one!
