Today's 228 entrants in the 5000 meter run and 1.5 mile fun walk/run was the second largest number of participants in the history of the Iron Furnace, as reported by race director Tom Dawson. The beautiful weather contributed to a race-day registration of about 100 runners and walkers.
The male winner was Zach Sabatino from Morgantown, West Virginia. Sabatino's time of 15:05 was the second fastest time run on the Lonaconing course. The record is 14:50 set in 1997 by Randy Lowe. The 24 year-old ran for West Virginia University's cross country and track and field teams until 2004 when WVU cut their men's programs. He transferred to the University of Tennesee for his junior and senior seasons where he was an NCAA Division I All-American in cross country. This past February, Sabatino finished sixth in the 12k race at the USA Cross Country Championships in Boulder, Colorado, earning a spot representing the U.S. in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Mombasa, Kenya. Ryan Deak of Burke, Virginia finished second in 15:27 followed in third by defending champion Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg in 15:57.
The female winner was Hampshire High School and West Virginia University graduate Jennifer Davis. Davis' time of 17:15 was good enough for eleventh place overall and was only ten seconds shy of the course record of 17:05 set by Kristin Dudley in 2003. Davis and her twin sister Susan had stellar careers running for Hampshire High School which were continued in college. Davis was an NCAA Division I All-American in indoor track and field in 2005 as a member of WVU's Distance Medley Relay team and an NCAA qualifier in the 5000 meter run in outdoor track that same year. She currently resides and is training in the Morgantown area, running in post-collegiate track and field races as well as on the roads. Susan Gray of Greencastle, Pennsylvania finished second in 17:54 and Allegany High School cross country and track and field standout Lauryn MacFawn was the third female finisher in 19:45.
Masters winners (40 years and older) were Paula Bridges of Cumberland and Tim Schuller from Chambersburg, PA. Bridges completed the course in 21:22 with Schuller crossing the line in 17:28. The first Lonaconing finishers (female and male) were Amy Kiddy (29:42) and Marc Lawrence (22:53).
The overall male and female winners were awarded 200 dollars for their victories with the master's winners each earning 100 dollars for their efforts. Age group winners won glass mugs with the race logo. The 2008 event will mark the 20th anniversary of one of the area's largest road races.
