2010 Marine Corps
The Queen City Striders are looking for a few good men
and women to compete in the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon scheduled for Sunday,
October 31st. The Marine Corps Marathon is traditionally the 7th
largest marathon in the world and the 5th largest in the
The Striders have been trying to build a team
atmosphere among club members. The MCM presents a unique opportunity for club
members to train together towards a goal and to hopefully exceed those goals
together on race day. To pursue completion of the MCM as a fall goal, the
Striders will be promoting group training runs for those members who will
commit to representing QCS on October 31st.
The Marine Corps Marathon has seen its fair share of
success by the Queen City Striders. In 1981, Dave Rhinehart
placed 4th overall. Former QCS Racing Circuit winner Jeff Smith won
the whole thing in a time of 2:2129. More recently, Jaron Hawkins finished 3rd
and 4th in 2007 and 2008. Those same years, a team representing the
Striders made up of Hawkins, Jeremy Rice, and David Mertz won the team
division.
However, the MCM has never seen a giant contingent of
runners from QCS. This year, let’s take down a whole bunch of people and show
the running community what it truly means to be a member of a running club. It
is about camaraderie and pushing each other towards higher heights and tougher
goals.
Registration for MCM will start on April 7th.
But this race fills up very fast. The Striders would like to know if you are
interested. Plans need to be made to lock in hotel rooms at the group rate.
This year, the Striders plan on staying at the Virginian Suites adjacent to the
finish line.
If you are interested in competing with other QCS
athletes at the Marine Corps Marathon, please contact the Striders at qcstriders@gmail.com or Jaron Hawkins at frojoe23@hotmail.com.

Our hope is to field a male and female team as well as
Masters teams for each sex. We’d also like to see some
members back up on the podium this year!
