The Dream
The gun went off. I burst forward. All my energy became speed. I pushed forward to the head of the line. I closed into the inside lane. My feet became a blur. I never wanted anything in my life more than this. One lap completed, and three to go. I keep pushing myself. The sun is shining down on me; sweat trickles down my forehead. I complete the second lap. The crowd is cheering me, and I look as strong as ever. I am halfway through this. I push even further, the others are pressing toward me. I cannot let them pass me. The last lap is my strongest. With a lap to go, I begin sprinting. My legs are numb and my body's telling me to stop. My mind is telling me to run. I sprint faster, no one can catch me. Then, I feel a ray of sunlight, and I wake up from my dream.

Hawkins, MacFawn capture Katie's 5K titles

GRANTSVILLE -- Syracuse University-bound Lauryn MacFawn and Frostburg resident Jaron Hawkins took home the Katie's 5K race women's and men's titles, respectively,                                Saturday at New Germany State Park in Grantsville.
MacFawn, 18, eased through the redesigned course in 20 minutes, 50 seconds, good for 26th among 101 official finishers in the 5K (3.1-mile) trail race. Amy Rowan, 28, of Cumberland, was second in the women's field and 29th overall in 21:33. Rounding out the medalists was Paula Bridges, 42, also of Cumberland, who took the masters crown in 23:37.
Hawkins, 25, showed he didn't take much time off after his 38th place finish in the Boston Marathon six weeks ago. He cruised to the finish line in 16:34 for his sixth victory in the memorial series. Hawkins was followed by Northern Garrett graduate Ryan Bowser, 18, in 17:05 and LeHigh Valley University harrier Dan DeWitt, 20,    of Frostburg, in 17:39.
The race is run in honor of Katie DeRosa who, at the age of 13 in August 1998, was struck and killed by a car while out for an evening run. Her father, Norm DeRosa, served as the starter at Saturday's race and reminded runners to enjoy the freedom of the sport of running no matter what inspired them to get to the starting line.
The next club-sponsored event on the Queen City Striders summer calendar is the Junior Striders one- and two-mile runs at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at Glendening Park in Frostburg. The gun at the 20th annual Iron Furnace 5K in Lonaconing goes off at 8 a.m. on June 28.
