The 8th Annual Lisa Wade Memorial 5-K Run
The 8th Annual Lisa’s Race was a huge success, with a record crowd of 331 participants. 170 people completed the 5k run, with the rest participating in either the 1..5 mile fun run/walk or Corey’s Course, our new 15 minute handicap friendly walk in memory of Lisa’s cousin Corey Broadwater.
The weather was humid, but otherwise great. The crowd had a great time at the after race festivities, socializing and enjoying the bounty of refreshments. Awards were presented to the top finishers in each age group including: female overall- Amy Rowan; male overall- Jaron Hawkins (who beat the course record and earned himself a $100 bounty!); female masters overall- Paula Bridges; male masters overall- Tom Ruckert; female area high school runner- Jennifer Cosner (Southern Garrett High School); male area high school runner- Ian P MacFawn (Allegany High School) *
As usual, we had a bounty of door prizes to distribute (plus our usual “freebie table” compliments of Dr. Joy Cousins) The top door prizes this year included an American flag which had been flown over the Capital Building in Washington DC, compliments of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. Our friends from the UK, Mark and Carmella Pearson, couldn’t attend this year but sent their “hello” to everyone along with a soccer ball from England. We had autographed items from Brad Paisley, Mia Hamm, Wes Ours, Hines Ward and Aaron Laffey. We completed the door prizes with our grand prize, a one night stay at the Comfort Inn in McHenry.
This year we were very fortunate to receive a football, signed by members of last year’s WVU football team. We were given permission to raffle the ball, and it raised us a whopping $1500.00! Thanks to all who supported our cause by selling/purchasing tickets! The ball was won by 10 year old Isaac Jackson, of Westernport. He is an avid WVU football fan (and very happy right now!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just can’t say it enough, to all the people who have supported the race by volunteering, donating financially, donating door prizes or refreshments, and last but not least, attending the event! Proceeds from this year’s race will fund scholarships for graduating athletes at Mountain Ridge, Southern and Northern High Schools. The 1st annual “Corey M. Broadwater Special Achievement Award” will be given to a graduating student in the Mineral County School system who shows a drive to succeed despite a physical or mental challenge.
Visit our Lisa 5k Run "MySpace" page (and sign our guestbook while you're there!) The address is www.myspace.com/lisawade5krun. Again thanks! Lois and Danny Wade
*There was a lot of interest in the jackets received by the top finishers, that was embroidered with the Lisa Race logo. They were done at Personal Best in Lavale. He has the artwork on file if you want to see him about ordering one.
