Call for "Snow Stories"

BLIZZARD CENTRAL, USA - The Queen City Striders are asking YOU, local readers and runners, to submit your "snow stories" to the website. As you may have noticed, our region got smacked by a gigantic, two-round winter storm over the past week. We want to know the following:
How did it affect your life?
Were you able to make it out for work?
Was running even a possibility, or were you stuck inside?
Are your arms now the size of watermelons from all the shoveling?
Did you have access to a treadmill, and if you did, did you use it?
What has the storm done to your spring racing plans?
For each submission, we are hoping to post something similar to the following (using myself as an example):

My Story - Dan DeWitt:

In my case, the storm made it very difficult to run outside. Before this past week, I had just completed three weeks of high mileage, so I took a big step back this week. I plan to do the same over the next week and then get back into things towards the end of the month. I love to run in the snow, but when it becomes a never-ending game of car-dodging, I just get tired of it. Plus, it kills my lower legs! I am hoping some sunshine will melt a lot of the snow this week and start to make the streets a little more welcoming in the near future. My goals for the spring include the Tim Kennard 10-Miler and VA Beach 8k in March and the Mountain MD Marathon in April. This storm has hopefully made me think a little more wisely about my training heading into these events. So long as any more major storms stay away, I am hoping my remaining weeks of training will keep me in shape for these events.

Please e-mail your submissions to me at qcstriders@gmail.com. Also, please feel free to submit photos of you and your family out in the snow. Our goal is to be able to come together as a community of runners, even if the snow has kept us from being able to physically meet to run together very much over the last week or two.

Stay safe out there and happy running!

The past couple weeks has been very trying for me. I am usually not one to get excited about missing days running, but this past week has really bothered me as I had to cut my long run short last weekend (just after the 2/6 blizzard).

After that I was unable to run again until Thursday and then I found myself trying to get all my weekly miles in in 3 days. It made my long run yesterday especially tough as my legs were "dead". As much as I dislike the treadmill, this weather has made me consider buying one just for those extreme cases that I absolutely cannot get outside.

While we are on the subject of winter running I would just like to mention how important it is to protect exposed skin. I actually wear a face moisturizer with sunblock to keep my face in good shape, but I learned the hard way about prolonged exposure on bare skin in the elements.

Two weeks ago I ran an 18 miler in about 4 inches of show (when I could actually get on the canal) and my socks and pants didn't quite meet leaving a small area of skin exposed. This area got some damaged from the cold and now I have what looks like a "brush burn" all around my ankles. It is especially annoying on my Achilles. So even a couple weeks later, I am still dealing with this problem. Long story short---cover up!! I am really looking forward to Spring.

Woody’s Snow Story

The snow really affected my running in the past week.  Before the storm I had been slowly raising my miles.  I was not able to do much running early in the week because of the snow.  I ended up doing a lot of biking inside.  This snow really made me want to get a treadmill.

I was doing a lot of riding early in the week.  It made it easier my watching the WVU game.  I ended up riding 2 hours and 20 minutes while watching the game.  I finally got to go run on Thursday-Sunday.  In those days I got a good bit of miles in which felt good.

I was really starting to get “cabin fever”.  My goals for this spring are hazy at best.  I plan on doing the Tim Kennard 10 mile race in early March, but after that I am not sure what races I will be running.  Hopefully training will go well for a while.

Running Log

I have definitely not enjoyed trying to keep some kind of continuity to my running program.
I got a run in Friday, Feb. 5th morning before the "big one" came to town.
I have found the best time to run these days is @ 4 to 5 am in the morning when you can run down the center of the street without traffic disrupting your progress.
My pace has been terrible due to slipping & sliding. (I need to buy some spikes!!)
I do not have a treadmill (because I can't stand them anyway)
My only other option is to run around the downtown cumberland mall (one loop = 3/8 mile) to avoid traffic but that is frustrating due to all the second hand smoke from people going to the dollar store or CVS pharmacy..
My poor weak arms have been given a workout almost everyday.
As I am typing this email, the snow has once again started-----I can't take it----Not one more day
