WESTERNPORT - Nearly 200 runners and walkers braved 20-degree temperatures and delayed Thanksgiving Day temptations of an early-morning meal by participating in the 12th annual Turkey Day 5K event in Westernport.
The out-and-back, or up-and-down, 3.1-mile road run starts and finishes near the American Legion Victory Post 155 and heads up state Route 36 for 1.55 miles. The event, coordinated by Mountain Ridge High School cross country coaches Tom Dawson and Norm DeRosa, benefits the Miners fall running team.
Just 12 days after leading the Frostburg State University women's cross country team in the Division III Mid-East Region Championship, senior Jennifer Patton, 21, of Barton, was the first female to cross the finish line. Patton stopped the clock in 20:56, an average of 6:45 per mile. Paula Healey, 27, of Pocasset, Mass., was second in 21:21 and Kimberly Vest, 29, of Frostburg, was third in 21:30.
Paula Bridges, of Cumberland, won the women's masters title. She finished 43rd overall in 22:41.
Frostburg resident Jaron Hawkins outlasted Dan DeWitt for first overall in the 185-runner field. Hawkins, 26, finished in 15:46 to DeWitt's 16:05. DeWitt, 21, averaged 5:11 per mile, six seconds off Hawkins's 5:05 pace.
Dennis Mickey, of Ridgeley, W.Va., was the first 40-and-over runner to the finish line. Mickey placed fourth overall in 17:23. It was Mickey's eighth top-five finish in the last 10 years.
